Details
Every year on the first Saturday of November, the Anlo Ewes of Ghana's Volta Region celebrate this. A magnificent durbar of chiefs and citizens is an essential feature of this festival. Hogbetsotso, also known as "the Exodus Festival," is held annually to commemorate the Anlo Ewes' escape from the tyrannical ruler of Notsie - Agokoli of Togo. The chiefs appear on the durbar grounds dressed in their most charming royal regalia, sitting in state to acknowledge and receive homage from their subjects. The entire ceremony is interspersed with soul-stirring drumming and dancing.
