Details
The Aboakyer festival is a bushbuck hunting celebration held by the people of Winneba in Ghana's Central Region. In the Fante dialect spoken by the people of the Central Region, the name Aboakyer translates as "hunting for game or animal." The festival was established to commemorate Simpafo's migration (traditional name given to the people of Winneba). The people moved from the north-eastern African town of Timbuktu in the ancient Western Sudan Empire to their current home on Ghana's central coast.
