Eight Hours Day celebrates the achievements of workers and their struggle for an 8-hour work day. On April 21, 1856, workers marched through the streets of Melbourne demanding an 8-hour working day. Their protest was ultimately successful and earned the Australians a reduced work day and more humane working conditions. The day serves to remember all of those who endured harsh working conditions and the battle to secure better working conditions. Eight Hours Day is an annual holiday in Tasmania and is celebrated on the second Monday in March. Elsewhere in the country, it is referred to as Labour Day.

The central event of the Tyrol’s annual Krampus mania is the Krampuslauf. This translates to Krampus Run but is now usually referred to in English as the Krampus Parade. In centuries past, the wintertime happening was a race in which entrants tried to outpace a runner dressed as Krampus. The spirited tradition held that entrants were supposed to be drunk so that Krampus would want to catch them. Dozens of Krampus Festivals animate Austria. The central event is always the Krampus Parade, a spectacular nocturnal procession of terrifyingly clad Krampus figures and Perchten elves.

End of year celebrations in Madeira do not start and end with just a fireworks display. In fact, the holiday festival in Funchal starts at the beginning of December and lasts until the “Dia de Reis” (“Three Kings Day”) on January 6th, featuring cultural, ethnographic, and artistic events throughout the city. Funchal’s naturally-formed amphitheatre city is transformed into a holiday dream with thousands of lights and decorations placed up and down the city’s main avenues. With holiday songs playing in the background as you stroll through the decorated squares, you will feel like you have entered into a winter wonderland, despite the pleasantly warm weather.

Fans of Ancient Egypt will adore this festival, which takes place twice a year on October and February 22nd. The magic of this festival is all in the timing – at these two times of the year, the sun aligns with the entrance of the Abu Simbel temples honoring Ramses II and his wife, Queen Nefertari, to illuminate two of the three statues within – leaving Ptah, the god of the underworld, in darkness. Interestingly, the entire temple had to be moved when the Egyptian government made plans to dam Lake Nasser in the 20th century. This was achieved by cutting the monument into massive blocks for transport, each weighing 30 tons! Needless to say, there was some careful maths involved to get the temples to align again as they used to, although in the process the day had to be moved forward. Originally, the alignment would have occurred on the 21st of October and February.

The Day of Reconciliation is a public holiday in South Africa held annually on 16 December. The holiday came into effect in 1995 after the end of apartheid, with the intention of fostering reconciliation and national unity for the country. The date was chosen because it was significant to both Afrikaner and black African cultures. The government chose a meaningful date for both ethnic groups because they recognized the need for racial harmony. The celebration of the Day of Reconciliation can take the form of remembering past history, recognizing veteran's contributions, marching, and other festivities.

Yom Kippur is the holiest day in Judaism and Samaritanism. It occurs annually on the 10th of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar. Primarily centered on atonement and repentance, the day's observances consist of full fasting and ascetic behavior accompanied by intensive prayer as well as sin confessions. Yom Kippur in Israel is the one day when normal life across Israel stops. All businesses close, including all restaurants and places of leisure. All transportation stops. It’s the only day all year where Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s major airport, stops functioning, as does all public transport. Almost all private vehicles also stop so the roads become totally empty for the day, apart from the odd emergency vehicle and children and adults riding bikes!
While Israel completely shuts down on Yom Kippur, it’s a great opportunity to make the most of your time in the Middle East by heading down to a guided tour of Jordan. This 3-Day Petra, Wadi Rum and Jordan Highlights Tour  departs on Tuesday and allows travelers to spend the days of Yom Kippur in Jordan, and gets you back to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv in time for the weekend.

By the end of September, northern Colorado should see changing leaves, then early October for central Colorado and mid to late October for the southern portion of the state. The 2022 fall foliage prediction map predicts similar peak colors. Cooler evenings, shorter days, all the pumpkin-themed drinks and foods you can think of — the start of fall is just a few days away. And that means seasonal fall colors are right around the corner, according to state forestry officials.

When talking about China Ice Festival, people are typically referring to the Harbin Ice and Snow World, which displays ice sculptures of huge proportions and opens usually from 11am to 10pm each day. Best time to enter: Harbin gets dark at around 4 pm in winter. The best time to enter the ice world is around 3 pm to appreciate the transparent and shining ice sculptures in the daytime, soon followed by the dazzling colors and light effects at night. It is recommended to spend no more than 4 hours inside the ice world, since it is well below freezing, especially after sunset.
